With a history steeped in entrepreneurship, Millicent Parker Oldham has joined the family ranks as the latest business owner.
Oldham, the daughter of Ted and Rhonda Parker of Mer Rouge, has opened Salon Rouge, a beauty shop in Mer Rouge, making her the third and final daughter to own her own business. She is following in older sister Amanda Parker Hogan's beautician footsteps, in addition to following family tradition.
Ted Parker, the owner of Med-Life Ambulance, began his career as an entrepreneur with his father, former Mer Rouge Mayor, T.J. Parker, when the pair bought Parker Chevrolet in Mer Rouge in 1965. The younger Parker later started Med-Life Ambulance in Mer Rouge, which expanded to cover the entire Morehouse Parish and then into Richland Parish
But, Oldham's legacy does not end with her father. Her mother's parents, Scout and Opal Gentry owned a very successful dress shop aptly named Gentry's, which was managed by Rhonda.
Oldham, who graduated from Prairie View Academy and attended the universities of Louisiana Lafayette and Monroe, began watching sister Amanda, and knew she had found what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.
"I had always been interested in doing hair and make-up," said Oldham. "But, seeing Amanda's career and success was when I discovered my passion for them."
Oldham began taking classes at the Bastrop Beauty School in 2007 and has never looked back. She worked at Hogan's Salon Couture for four years before Hogan decided to sell her shop and simplify her life.
At that point, Oldham decided to open her own salon in the town where she grew up.
I have always wanted a place of my own," said Oldham. "And, there is no better place in the world than right here at home."
Oldham's shop is open by appointment only and she offers a wide variety of services including blow drying and style, colors and highlights and smoothing treatments such as the popular Brazilian Blowout. She has plans to expand her services in the future but is content to build her business gradually.
Oldham's oldest sister, Emily Cage, and husband Shelby recently opened An Advanced Roof, a roofing business in Shreveport.
