American Cancer Society and Morehouse Parish staff partner Priscilla Turner said each month the committee hosts a team captain meeting to discuss ideas and go over funds raised.
Turner said the meeting will be held at the metal building behind the Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office, and anyone interested in learning about Relay for Life is invited to come too.
“Currently we have 14 team captains,” she said. “And we also have past participants who come to the meetings, and have just not registered yet. We had about 23 people at last months meeting.”
According to the Relay for Life website, the Morehouse Parish cooperation currently has 14 teams and 61 participants having raised $3,477.
Turner said the committee keeps in touch via Facebook, and meet every month to brainstorm fundraising ideas and other event activities, and said anyone interested is welcome to attend and learn more about the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
“We will share ideas and discuss fun things to do during the event, ” she said. “The food at the relay is already taken care of because many of our teams will camp out around the track during the relay and sell refreshments and things like hotdogs, gumbo and hamburgers.”
Turner said there is always a mission statement at each meeting to keep everyone empathetic and true to the purpose of the relay.
“It reminds us why we relay and why we are here and what we are raising money for,” she said. “It could be a video about cancer research or advocacy or a first hand presentation from a survivor.”
Last year's relay went unexpectedly well, she said, and hopes the 2013 relay is even better.
“We did not think that so people would support us because there has been no relay in
Morehouse Parish for about five years,” Turner said. “Teri Lee (a cancer survivor) and Sara Hawkins (Bastrop resident) took on the job of handling last years' event. They blew it up; they did phenomenal and no one expected it.”
Turner said last year they helped to raise approximately $58,000, and plan on doing even better this year with this years goal set at $59,000.
Turner said the Morehouse Parish 2013 Relay for Life will be held at Bastrop High School football stadium on April 19 at 6 p.m. and will last until 6 a.m.
