  • Clinching a share of the District 2-2A championship, the Sterlington Panthers eased to a 78-45 Senior Night victory over visiting Lake Providence on Friday night.
Sterlington (21-9, 9-1) now awaits the outcome of Monday night's makeup game between Ferriday and Homer. A Homer win on Monday would create a first-place tie.
If necessary, two tiebreaker games are scheduled for Wednesday night at Ruston. Homer and Jonesboro-Hodge are scheduled to playoff the girls tiebreaker at 5 p.m., with Sterlington and Homer meeting in the boys game at approximately 7:15 p.m.
Buckets by Matt Allred and Brandon Douglas staked Sterlington to an early 4-0 lead against visiting Lake Providence in Friday's game. Sterlington never gave up the lead.
Up 9-4, the SHS Panthers held Lake Providence without a field goal for nearly nine minutes.
Allred's 3-pointer on a kickout from Brandon Douglas started a string of three three-point possessions. Douglas' blocked shot on the defensive end led to Lance Richard's 3-pointer and Filip Duda added a three-point play to put Sterlington in front 18-4.
Sterlington upped its margin to 27-6 at the end of the quarter.
Douglas opened the second quarter scoring with a three-point play and Richard swished another triple — Derek Price assisted on both buckets — as the homestanding Panthers pushed their lead to 33-6.
Sterlington carried a 45-23 spread into intermission and Lake Providence was never closer than 21 in the second half.
Douglas led a quartet of SHS Panthers in double digits with 17 points. Allred scored 10 of his 16 points in the first quarter, Richard had 16 on five 3-pointers and Jaylon Wade came off the bench to score 10.
Lake Providence (2-19, 2-7) received 12 points from Devonta Kelley and 11 from A.J. Bruce.
