Tyler Jones cranked out 18 points, seven rebounds and seven blocked shots as Prairie View claimed the runner-up slot in MAIS District 3-2A with a 49-40 decision over River Oaks in the regular season finale for both teams Thursday night.
All four schools from the district descended upon River Oaks for a quadruple header. Prairie View and Riverdale entered the day with hopes of creating a three-way tie for first place. Instead, Central Hinds clinched the district championship with a 59-53 victory in the early boys game, dropping the Rebels into third place.
In Thursday's nightcap, River Oaks led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter and maintained a one-point edge, 19-18, at intermission.
“We were really flat,” Prairie View coach Joseph Waller said. “I think the boys were a little bummed out after Riverdale got beat. River Oaks is playing better basketball at the end of the season. They shot the ball a little better tonight than they did the last time we played them.”
Making 10-of-11 free throws in the third quarter, the Spartans forged ahead 33-27, before outscoring the Mustangs 16-13 in the final frame.
Jacobs converted 6-of-7 free throws and Matt Reed and Kory McLarrin were both 2-for-2 from the line in the pivotal third quarter.
“It wasn't pretty by any means,” Waller said. “We pulled away a little in the third quarter mainly because we had some kids hit some free throws. But we won a district game on the road, so you can't be too disappointed.”
Prairie View's entire point total came from the starting five. Jones was complemented in the scoring by Brendan Tubbs with 11 points and seven boards, Jacobs with 10 points, Reed with six and McLarrin with four.
Zach Barnes and Brenden MacGregor shared high scoring honors for the Mustangs (8-16, 0-9) with 11 points. Jamie Downs added nine, Taylor Tindall five and Norquis Scurfield four.
Prairie View will play in the North State Tournament, which gets under way Monday at Leake Academy in Madden, Miss. Pairings will be released Sunday afternoon.
