  • Brendan Tubbs came out blazing.
Knocking down three 3-pointers, Tubbs scored half of his 26 points in the first quarter as Prairie View wiped out River Oaks 61-29 Friday night at Spartan Gym. Completing a double-double, the senior forward grabbed 14 rebounds and also doled out five assists.
River Oaks led twice early, going up 2-0 on Jamie Downs' breakaway bucket and 5-3 on Brenden MacGregor's triple from way out.
Prairie View (14-11, 4-3) responded with 12 unanswered points.
Brandon Jacobs' 3-pointer put the Spartans ahead for good. Tyler Jones intercepted the ensuing inbounds pass for an easy layup, Tubbs buried consecutive 3s and Jones made one-of-two from the line to give Prairie View a 15-5 lead.
Single-handedly accounting for the final five points of the quarter, Tubbs hit another trey off a cross court pass from Jacobs and scored from underneath on a pass from Kory McLarrin to give the Spartans a 20-9 advantage.
Tubbs' conventional three-point play and Jacobs' 3-pointer sparked a 10-2 flurry to start the second quarter as the Spartans widened the spread to 20, 31-11.
River Oaks shaved the deficit to 15, 33-18, at halftime.
Despite the comfortable lead, coach Joseph Waller wasn't altogether pleased with the Spartans' first half effort.
"We had some turnovers in the first half, which I thought helped keep them in the game," Waller said. "I told them we needed to cut down on our turnovers and I thought we could have rebounded better."
Apparently, the Spartans received their coach's message.
"We had zero turnovers in the second half. I was proud of that," Waller said. "We did a better job on the boards in the second half, too."
River Oaks drew within 13 twice early in the third quarter, before the Spartans went on a 15-0 tear to put the game out of reach.
Jacobs went the length of the court for a transition layup, Payton Hollis scored from down low, Jones finished off a three-point play, Tubbs scored on the break and Jacobs converted the back end of a two-shot foul as the Spartans opened up a 45-22 bulge by the end of the third frame.
Prairie View's second five closed out the game in style, scoring a combined seven points on consecutive possessions. Hunter Carpenter splashed in a 3-pointer off the glass and Jacob Aulds tacked on a four-point play, increasing the Spartans' lead to 61-27.
Tubbs was the game's only double figures scorer. Eight different Spartans made the box score. Jones collected nine points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, while Jacobs had nine points and six assists.
Prairie View shot only 32.3 percent (22-of-68) from the floor, but was 9-of-22 (40.1 percent) from 3-point range, while polishing the offensive glass for 22 second-chance shots. Pressing from the outset, the Spartans were plus-13 (19-6) in the turnover battle.
Page 2 of 2 - MacGregor and Zach Barnes paced the Mustangs (8-14, 0-7) with six points apiece. Barnes also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and Norquis Scurfield blocked five shots.
Prairie View closes out its home schedule Tuesday night against Riverdale. Tubbs, Jones and McLarrin will be recognized during a Senior Night ceremony.
Notes: Walker Stinson had eight points and Jack Alexander scored four of his six points in the fourth quarter as River Oaks won the JV game 25-23. Lucas Crockett topped the Spartans' scoring with seven.
