  • Lady Spartans clinch district title

  • Kristen Oliphant led a quartet of starters in double figures as Prairie View clinched the MAIS District 3-2A championship with a 63-30 verdict over River Oaks on Friday night.
    Prairie View (23-7, 7-0) scored the first seven and never looked back.
    Oliphant connected from the left baseline on the Lady Spartans' second possession to open the scoring. Moments later, Tori Simmons made the front end of a two-shot foul and missed the second, but Dani Anderson converted the follow-up. Capping the early run, Anderson added another bucket from down low on an assist from Sarah Cammarasana.
    Prairie View maintained a seven-point lead, 14-7, as time expired in the first quarter.
    Simmons started the second half scoring with a pair of free throws, Cammarasana added a transition layup after an Oliphant steal and Kaylah Hobbs scored on a putback to stretch the Lady Spartans' advantage to 20-7.
    River Oaks (13-10, 3-4) was never again within single digits.
    Hannah Morrison connected from the left baseline to bring the Lady Mustangs within 22-12, but the Lady Spartans responded with an 8-0 flurry. Oliphant had a hand in all eight points, swishing a pair of trifectas and setting up Cammarasana's 12-footer from the right side.
    Prairie View held a 39-18 halftime advantage and led by as many as 37, 59-22, late in the third frame.
    Oliphant's final line included 14 points — 11 in the first half — seven steals and five assists. She was 4-of-9 from 3-point range. Cammarasana was next with 13 points, Anderson posted a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds and Simmons accounted for 11 points.
    Jaicie Gilley led the Lady Mustangs with 11 points.
    Using the full court press to set up a series of high percentage shots, the Lady Spartans converted 53.7 (30-of-49) of their field goal attempts. Prairie View also shot 40 percent (4-of-10) from 3-point range and 70 percent (7-of-10) from the free throw line.
    Prairie View will observe Senior Night prior to Tuesday night's 6 p.m. game against Riverdale. Oliphant and Simmons will be honored before playing in their final home game.
    Notes: Making her first varsity start, Cammarasana, a sophomore, had four steals and four assists, along with 13 points. Cammarasana started in place of junior guard Erika Guerrero, who was held out due to an ankle injury. … Guerrero is listed as day-to-day. … Prairie View won its sixth district title in seven years. … The Lady Spartans close out the regular season at River Oaks on Friday, Feb. 8, before heading to Madden, Miss. (Leake Academy) for the North State Tournament. … Victoria Domino scored six of her 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Spartans edged River Oaks 26-23 in the JV game. Trailing 18-11 at halftime, the Lady Spartans outscored the Lady Mustangs 7-0 in the third quarter and 8-5 in the fourth.
