Andrew Anderson gave Ouachita Christian all the scoring it would need with a pair of first half goals as the Eagles trimmed Bastrop 3-1 Monday night at Ram Stadium.
Anderson opened the scoring with a goal from the doorstep about 10 minutes into the match.
Shortly before halftime, Anderson buried his second goal on a throw-in from Daniel Gladney.
Despite managing just two shots — both by Tyler Bayless — in the first half, the Rams found themselves down only 2-0 at the break.
"We had a couple of people playing out of position and we're not very deep," said Bastrop coach Joey Toncrey, noting that the Rams played without starting right winger Colten Putman. "We can make all the excuses we want, but OCS dressed only 12 players and their top scorer was out. We just need to finish and find the back of the net more often."
After receiving a tongue-lashing from the coaching staff at halftime, the Rams came out more aggressive on the offensive end to start the final 40 minutes.
Timing a precise corner kick from Caleb McGurk, Bayless headed his third goal of the season into the net to bring the Rams within 2-1.
Bastrop threatened with the tying goal, but overshot the goal on a direct kick.
Brantley Oliver applied the dagger, connecting from 12 yards out from the right side in the 64th minute.
For Bastrop (0-14), which completed its second season of soccer, it was the same old story. Out-shot 19-4, the Rams were simply unable to mount a consistent attack. Under constant fire, Bastrop goal keeper Cade Cantrell was credited with 10 saves.
"Our defense gave out," Toncrey said. "It's the same principle as in football — when the offense stays on the field, the defensive isn't getting a break. We have some work to do (offensively) before next year. Defensively, we have to learn to not just clear the ball, but to keep it out of the middle of the field. We have to get more technically sound."
Bastrop's seven seniors were recognized between games during Senior Night activities.
"We have to try to replace seven seniors, six starters, so we're already in rebuilding mode," Toncrey said. "We're losing out two goal scorers, Tyler Bayless and Adron Greenwood, and our goalie Cade Cantrell. Cade was outstanding all year long and leaves a big hole to fill.
"Hopefully, we can get more people out next year and get some more football players after their season ends. We need to be more athletic and we need some more speed. We need to find some good leaders on and off the field. We lost a lot of good leaders this year."
