BOYS: Prairie View 51, River Oaks 34

Brendan Tubbs packaged together 19 points, 11 rebounds and six steals as Prairie View snapped a five-game losing streak with a 51-34 victory over River Oaks on Friday night.

Prairie View (11-9, 1-1) stormed out to an 8-0 lead as Tubbs buried a pair of 3-pointers around Matt Reed's rebound bucket.

River Oaks retaliated with a 12-0 flurry, highlighted by eight points from Zach Barnes.

Prairie View regained the lead, 13-12, at the end of the quarter on Tyler Jones' rebound deuce and Brandon Jacobs' three-point play and never trailed again.

Trailing 24-18 at halftime, the Mustangs closed the gap to 29-26 midway through the third quarter on putbacks by Barnes and Norquis Scurfield.

After River Oaks missed an opportunity to draw within one on its next possession, the Spartans assumed command of the game behind a full court press.

Outscoring the Mustangs 10-0 over the final 2:24 of the third period, the Spartans opened up a 39-26 bulge. Tubbs set up Reed for an easy bucket to start the run. Jacobs and Kory McLarrin added layups off the press, and Jones closed out the third quarter scoring with a pair of follow-ups.

Closing out a 12-0 spurt, McLarrin opened the fourth quarter scoring with a rebound bucket which widened the spread to 41-26.

River Oaks was never closer than 11 the rest of the way.

Jacobs finished with 12 points to join Tubbs in double figures. Jones provided eight points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots, McLarrin had eight points, seven boards and six assists and Reed pitched in four points.

Pounding the offensive glass, the Spartans amassed 17 offensive rebounds and turned the ball over only nine times.

Playing in Spartan Gym for the first time since Dec. 15, Prairie View returns home against Central
