Brandon Goyne, a sophomore outfielder for the LSU-Alexandria baseball team, died late Friday afternoon after collapsing in practice earlier in the day.
Brandon's aunt, Beth Freeman of Bastrop, said the cause of death was an apparent heart attack.
Brandon was rushed to Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria after collapsing during Friday's preseason practice session. Freeman said that his teammates as well as several members of the LSU-A softball team were at the hospital in support of Brandon.
Derek Goyne, Brandon's older brother, is a senior infielder for the Generals. Freeman said that her nephews were roommates, adding that Derek transferred to LSU-A from East Texas Baptist University to have the opportunity to play with Brandon.
According to a story posted on the Alexandria Town Talk web site (www.thetowntalk.com), Brandon Goyne appeared in 27 games as a redshirt freshman for the Generals last season, batting .239, with a triple, three doubles and six RBI.
Brandon signed with the Generals out of Elysian Fields (Texas) High School.
Freeman said funeral arrangements were pending as of early Saturday afternoon.
Among the survivors are his father, Scott Goyne, formerly of Bastrop; and his paternal grandparents, Wayne and Sylvia Goyne of Bastrop.
