  • Pastor's Corner: For what it's worth, let's consider the blessing of daily fellowship with the Heavenly Father

  • The Psalmist sang, “How amicable or lovely are your tabernacles, O Lord—My soul longs, yea, even faints for the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh cries out for the living God,” (Psalm 84:1-2). To be in the very presence of Jesus should be the desire of every child of God.

Richard Baker wrote “Longing for Jesus”, a song that expressed his heart’s desire. “I have a longing in my heart for Jesus, I have a longing in my heart for him; although I know his presence lingers near me, I have a longing just to see his face. Longing, longing for Jesus, I have a longing in  my heart for him; just to be near him, to feel his presence, I have a longing in my heart for him.” In the second verse, Mr. Baker expressed his desire to walk with Jesus and to hold his hand and to be led and loved by him. I, too, have that longing for Jesus; and every day, I pray for a consciousness of his presence.
Recently, after a long and very full day, the kind of desire that I and others need was demonstrated so dramatically to me. It had rained and the wind had blown the water into puddles under my carport. Darkness had fallen and the rain had chilled the air, but “Fellow” was waiting for me (Fellow is my two year old Boston Terrier companion). His joy was so apparent in his happy, enthusiastic greeting, and when I sat down in my chair, he was in my lap and cuddled up as close as he could get. Soon, he was under my left arm, and with his head lying upon my chest, his sparkling eyes were focused upon mine. He didn’t want food and was not asking for anything except the touch of my hand and some words of endearment from my lips.
I thought, this is the way God’s children, me included, should love God and want to be with him.
I resolved to daily practice this kind of expression of my love for and longing for my Lord; and Fellow helps me to remember! Each morning, he patiently waits for me to get my second cup of coffee, and he takes his favorite place upon my left side and chest. If I don’t reach out and touch him, he kisses my hand until I pet him. Then I thank God for loving me, and I thank Him for using Fellow to teach me how to love Jesus!
Mr. Baker’s third verse is for you who do not know this man Jesus, “You’ve never lived or found life’s greatest joy; Oh, won’t you now take him as Lord and Saviour, and know the fullness of his matchless love?”
