The west end of Bastrop will soon have a place for residents to shop for household goods in a new Dollar General that is scheduled to open March 1. This will be the third DG in Bastrop. It will be located at the corner of Alma Street and West Madison, next door to Christmas Realty. The other two stores are located on Crossett Road and North Washington. Woody Priest, with HP Investments, out of New Boston, Texas, is the developer of the new DG. Priest said his company will be the owner of the new store. “Today is the groundbreaking,” he said. “We’ll get busy building it around the first of November.” Mayor Betty Alford-Olive said the new store has been discussed since March. “Mr. [Jimmy] Christmas has been working on bringing this here for some time,” she said. “He bought the property from the Cyrus family and sold it to the developer.” Alford-Olive said she is “happy” that Christmas had this “vision for the west end of town.” “We feel this is going to be a very successful venture,” she said. “We look forward to many more [new businesses] just as successful on this end.” The Bastrop-Morehouse Chamber of Commerce director Dorothy Ford said this will be convenient for residents on the west end of Bastrop. “The residents on this side of town have to drive all the way to the other end of town to shop,” Ford said. “This is a great day for this side of town. It’s a dream that’s become a reality.” Priest said when DG contacted him about opening a new store here, the city was more than happy to accommodate him and his company. “I appreciate the mayor and the City of Bastrop for all the help they’ve given us,” he said. “They’ve welcomed us with open arms.”
