  • For about two weeks, I have fretted and stressed over a most perplexing, annoying, aggravating problem at my house. The gnats or fruit flies have just about driven me batty. They have gotten in my nostrils, eyes, ears, mouth and crawled on every exposed part of my body. Where were they coming from, and what would effectively eradicate them? The purchase and use of expensive pesticides were a waste of hope, time and money. I sprayed every crevice, crack, window and doorway. I scrubbed and sprayed the cabinets, floors, stove, washer, dryer and the outside of the refrigerator. Finally, I was convinced that my problem was not coming from outside the house—they must be hatching within!
After looking again at every square foot of space, I inspected the house, cabinets, etc. by sniffing! Nothing! You see, age has robbed me of much of my sense of smell. That’s handy when in close proximity of a skunk or removing a dead mouse from the premises, but it’s definitely a hindrance when searching for the source of gnats in the kitchen, living room and especially in the bedroom.
But determination energized by frustration finally prevailed. I removed all the canned, boxed and other stored foods from a small pantry closet. Sure enough, an Irish potato had escaped the confines of the bag and had gotten behind and under some packages. It was musty, rotten and covered with hundreds of mother gnats and their kids.
Then, I remembered some words spoken about and by Jesus that point to the source of so many of our problems. We tend to look for and blame outside sources (people, circumstances and Satan). We want to remedy the problem with bandages applied to the surface, or some miracle balm or remedy (my father thought Watkins White Liniment would cure anything, while my father-in-law was a specialist in the use of turpentine). But John said of Jesus, “He knew all men, and he did not need anyone to bear witness concerning man for he himself knew what was in man,” (John 2:24-25 NAS).
Exercising that perfect knowledge, he said, “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornication, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. All these things proceed from within and defile the man,” (Mark 7:21-23 NAS).
So, when gnasty problems arise, and the odor isn’t pleasant and our peace and happiness is interrupted by aggravating and annoying events, save yourself some time and heartache by asking God to do a room by room search of your inner being – it may be that something rotten inside is the breeding place for the gnats. Cooperate with him in the clean up!
