Morehouse General Hospital formally welcomed a new doctor Thursday who is a native of Morehouse parish. Dr. Curtis Sanders, OB/GYN, will begin at MGH on Nov. 1. Born in Mer Rouge, Sanders moved away and attended Southern University in Baton Rouge where he received his bachelor's degree in biology. In 1996, he received his Doctor of Medicine at the University of Kansas. From 1996-2000, he performed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport. Since 2005, Sanders has worked as the assistant professor of Clinical OB/GYN at LSU HSC in Monroe. “I've always wanted to practice near home,” Sanders said. “Anytime you can look around and see someone you grew up with or who knew your mom, you know it's a good fit.” MGH CEO Stephen Pitts said he wanted Sanders to move his practice to Bastrop before he even knew he was from this area. “On August 1, I had the pleasure of meeting him,” Pitts said. “I didn't even know he was from Mer Rouge. I only knew he was a very charming and highly educated young man.” Since 2000, Sanders has been active in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Since 2003, he has been board certified on the American Board of OB/GYN. Sanders has been the Fetal Infant Mortality Review Coordinator Medical Director for Region 8 and also the Medical Director of the Ouachita Nurse Family Partnership. He is a mentor for both the Student Nation Medical Association and Our Kids Program of Monroe. Sanders is currently living in Swartz with his wife, Tonya, and their two children. Until he moves to Morehouse, he said the commute, “will be about the same as it was to the hospital in Monroe.” “My family and I are looking forward to re-integrating ourselves into the community,” he said. In 2005 and 2011, Sanders won the Excellence in Teaching Award in the Association of Professors in Gynecology and Obstetrics. Those same two years, he was also LSU's Obstetrics and Gynecology's Teacher of the Year. Sander's new office will be located at 618 S. Washington. “I look forward to using my years of experience and surgical expertise to serve the patients of Morehouse Parish,” he said.
