  • “Said the robin to the sparrow, I would really like to know, why these anxious human beings, rush around and worry so. Said the sparrow to the robin, I don’t know, but I think that it must be, they have no heavenly Father such as watches o’re you and men.” Adapted . Jesus said, Fear not---are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? (A fourth of a penny) and one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore, you are of more value than many sparrows,” (Matthew 10:28-31).
Searching for answers to the many ills and troubles of our day is frustrating, and solutions seem to be non-existent. So, we stress and worry!
In an April issue of the Pastor’s Corner, we mentioned some Bible passages that give comfort, and I ended by mentioning Psalm 46 – “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; ---Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the heathen. I will be exalted in the earth.”
Our help and comfort comes when we grasp the fact that, “God is.” He is the eternal one! There was never a time when God was not! “In the beginning, God---“ (Genesis 1:1). God is now and always will be God! But what is he like?
He is holy, and not in moral and spiritual goodness alone. He stands apart, over and above, and non-dependant of all else. He created and rules over all. He alone is omnipotent. He’s the almighty. He has all power. God is omniscient – he has all knowledge of yesterdays, today’s, and tomorrow’s events. For a time, he limited himself by being the God-man. As man, he was hindered by time and space; but now, he is everywhere all the time – Omni-present. God is!
He is love, (1 John 4:16). On Calvary, he demonstrated his love for us, and three days later, his power was seen at an empty tomb!
This God who “is” is our refuge. The storms of life come to everyone, and when they come, we can take shelter in him. When we are weak, his strength makes us strong. When Katrina and Rita hit New Orleans, it was said that Southern Baptists were there first with the most and stayed there the longest. In our time of trial, we can “cast all our cares upon him for he cares for us,” (1 Peter 5:7). “He is our very present help in time of trouble,” (Psalm 46:1), and “God’s help is always right on time," (Psalm 46:5). For assurance, we can look back at history; God has a good track record of taking care of things. Read verses 6-9.
Page 2 of 2 - So, the lesson for us and the answer to our fears is, “Be still, and know that I am God, I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. “God is!” “Fear not!”
