  • Bastrop gets its first taste of preseason action tonight when it visits the Alexandria Trojans for a 6 p.m. scrimmage.
After two weeks in pads, coach Thomas Bachman says the Rams are ready to line up against an opponent.
“I think we're at the point where it will be good to go bang with somebody other ourselves,” said Bachman, the Rams' second-year head coach. “It's been Week 10 against Franklin Parish since we've had the opportunity to do that.”
From a coaching perspective, the scrimmage offers the chance to evaluate the team's strengths and weaknesses.
“This gives us an opportunity to see the progress we've made and the things we need to continue to iron out as we move closer and closer to Week 1.”
Bastrop's first offense will run a dozen plays to start tonight's scrimmage, followed by a 12-play scrimmage for ASH. Next, both second offenses will take eight snaps. Also, the first and second offenses from both schools will run a goal line segment. The scrimmage wraps up with a 12-minute quarter.
Two players who have stood out in practice this week are running back Kevin Heard and free safety Lester Lee.
Heard was a reserve last season.
“Kevin Heard had a real good day Wednesday,” Bachman said.
Lee, who recorded 32 tackles with an interception last season, is a returning starter.
“LL's played well,” Bachman said. “He's an athlete, plus he's smart. He understands what (defensive coordinator Brad Morace) is trying to get accomplished.”
Bastrop will play Ouachita on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. in the Bayou Jamb at ULM's Malone Stadium. Other games on the docket include Sterlington vs. West Ouachita at 2, Ouachita Christian vs. Oak Grove at 4 and defending Class 4A state champion Neville vs. defending 5A state champ West Monroe at 8.
