As anyone who has ever been through the job hunting process knows, it never hurts to have some luck.

For John Robert Warner, a chance encounter with Prairie View Principal Ed Bain led to the perfect position. Warner has been hired to teach Biology II and Chemistry and will coach the Spartans' defensive linemen while waiting out the one-year application process to be accepted into medical school.

Warner, who recently graduated from ULM with a degree in biology and a minor in chemistry, was hoping to find a teaching position near his home in Oak Grove. The coaching gig was a bonus.
In a time in which job opportunities are scarce, Warner never had to send out a single resume.

“My parents owned Mike's Fish House (near Oak Grove) at the time,” Warner said, recalling his April meeting with Bain. “I talked to Mr. Bain and he said he had a spot open. I asked if he had an opening for a biology teacher. I wasn't even looking for a coaching job.”

Warner and Bain both have ties to West Carroll Parish. Warner is a 2008 graduate of Oak Grove High School. Bain retired as the principal of Forest High before accepting his current position.

“Mr. Bain coached baseball in the West Carroll Dixie program and I grew up with Jonathan (Bain's son),” Warner said. “I was never on Mr. Bain's team, but I've known him for a long time.”

In a sense, Warner is following in his sister's footsteps. His sister, Jonann, was an assistant softball at coach at Prairie View on Bain's staff in 2008.

Warner couldn't be happier with the way things have worked out.

“I was considering working at a hospital, but I wanted to do something a little different for a change of pace,” Warner said. “I was looking for something other than an 8 to 5 job. I love football and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to coach.”

Warner joined the Prairie View staff earlier this month after teaching Biology at ULM during the first summer session.

At Oak Grove, Warner played defensive tackle for coach Vic Dalrymple and was also a first baseman for the Tigers' baseball team.
