Seventeen days to go until the first of several Morehouse Parish schools open for the new year, and a list of school supplies remain outstanding for many families.
One local business, Kraftman Federal Credit Union, wants to initiate help for those who need help in pursuing those supplies.
KFCU, along with other local businesses, will be holding a drive for back-to-school supplies, by requesting donations of school supplies and or the money to purchase school supplies for those less fortunate in the community.
“We know, due to the economic situation in Bastrop, a lot of parents are unable to afford school supplies for their children this year,” said KFCU board member Jan DeBlieux. “We want to help them out during this time of need.”
The mission of KFCU is to respond to the financial needs and interest of its members by encouraging thrift, providing low cost loans and appropriate financial education through quality service in a cost effective environment.
“We are very community oriented,” DeBlieux said. “We see the need that parents have right now and we want to help them out.”
KFCU will begin taking donations, beginning today and continue through Aug. 18.
“I’m going to meet with local merchants around town and ask for their help in this drive,” DeBlieux said. “I’m meeting with the other board members this week to decide on a special fundraiser event to be held sometime during the week of August 13 through the 18.”
DeBlieux said KFCU will collect the donations and give them to the Morehouse Parish School Board to be distributed.
“We will give them to someone at the school board who is familiar with the families who are in need of help,” she said.
Anyone interested in donating school supplies can visit the MPSB website at www.mpsb.us to view the back-to-school supply lists.
Donations can be brought to KFCU between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
