  • Football practice is officially under way for the Prairie View Spartans, who reported bright and early for a 7:30 a.m. Monday workout.

Following the two-hour session, senior tackle Cooper Brown, senior running back/linebacker Garrett Laird, junior wide receiver/free safety Maclendon Sharp and senior safety/wide receiver/running back Andrew Jenkins took part in a brief interview:

BDE: How did you spend your summer?

Cooper Brown: I spent the summer working with Keith Smith, fixing up a trailer and getting it ready to live in. Also, I bailed a little hay and did some scrapping.

Maclendon Sharp: I played baseball and came up here for football workouts.

I worked for Jerry Daugherty and Michael Costello on the farm, doing a little bit of everything. Kory (McLarrin) and I are getting ready to go bail some hay for Mr. Jerry right now.

BDE: What are the Spartans' keys to success this season?

Brown: Hard work, don't give up and have fun.

Andrew Jenkins: We're going to have to play hard for 48 minutes and nobody's going to give up.

BDE: What are your favorite and least favorite parts of preseason camp?

Brown: My least favorite parts are the heat and running.

Garrett Laird: I like running routes. The heat is everybody's least favorite part.

BDE: What class are you most looking forward to?

Sharp: Geometry with Mrs. (Hope) Bunch.

Jenkins: Mrs. (Diana) Dew's advanced math. She taught my college math class last year and she's a good teacher.

BDE: Which game are you most looking forward to?

Sharp: River Oaks. It's a rivalry game and it's been a while since we've beat them in football.

Laird: Riverfield because that's our rival and they've scheduled us for homecoming. Besides, we own them from last year.

BDE: What do you hope to accomplish during your senior year?

Laird: I believe in setting my goals high, so I want us to win the state championship.

Jenkins: I want to play for the state championship on Turkey Day.
