  • A Bayou Blue man charged with helping his wife commit suicide has been found dead in Houma with what Terrebonne Parish deputies say appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Courier reports (http://bit.ly/SJP5G4) that 69-year-old Charles Joseph Fanguy was found by deputies on a front lawn at the home of one of his friends Thursday morning. A passing motorist had spotted him.
Fanguy had been released on bond after his arrest on Wednesday on a charge of assisted suicide. A conviction could have meant 10 years in prison for Fanguy.
The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office said someone tipped them in June that Charles Fanguy had told acquaintances he had helped his wife end her life.
Betty Fanguy died May 17, and an autopsy determined that prescription pills and alcohol contributed to her death. She was 68.
Detectives said they determined that Betty had health problems and suicidal tendencies.
Authorities said they believe Charles Fanguy found her injured from a fall in their home and gave her prescription drugs and a non-alcoholic beverage to help her swallow them.
