Ashley Newton of Bastrop only started competing in track two months ago. Now she's headed to the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympics in two events. The national event will be held in Baltimore, July 22-29.
Competing for the Peak Performance Track Club of Monroe at last week's Regional Meet at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn., Newton cleared the bar at 3 feet, 7 ¼ inches to place third in the high jump and finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 61-3. Newton exceeded her personal record in the javelin by 10 feet on her final throw to qualify for her second event.
A sixth grader at Morehouse Magnet School, Newton competes in the Midget Division (ages 11-12).
