Pardon the bad cliché, but Alex Malmay and Dale Cagnolatti came out hotter than a Firecracker Saturday afternoon in the first round of the 41st annual Firecracker 4-Ball at the Morehouse Country Club.

Malmay and Cagnolatti blistered the front nine for a 31 en route to finishing the day with an eight-under-par 64.

The tournament concludes Sunday with tee times at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Bob Cooper and Tanner McDonald will join Malmay and Cagnolatti in Sunday's final group after putting together a round of 34-32—66 on Saturday.

Malmay and Cagnolatti birdied holes 1, 3, 6, 8 and 9 to card a five-under in the first round. After four straight pars, the duo birdied 14 and 15, before bogeying 16. Regrouping, they closed out the round with back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18.

Bret Munson and Eric Hsu and Ryan Nelson and Larry Foster are three shots back at 67. Also within striking distance are Brett Clausing and Chase Bostick at 68 and Fayette Jordan and Steve Freeland at 69.

David Hester and Bruce Black emerged as the early leaders in the first flight with a 68, while Curt Adams and Todd Gentry held the early lead in the second flight with 72. Rick Bozeman and Dell Bozeman head the third flight at 72. Scores were still pending for three teams in all three flights.

Scores for the fourth and fifth flights as well as the senior championship and first flights were pending.
