A Lafayette Police Department officer was killed in a weekend boating accident at Lake Maurepas in Livingston Parish.
Lafayette Police said 29-year-old Cpl. Joel Grayson had been with the department for more than five years and had earned a Medal of Valor.
He was off duty at the time of the Saturday evening accident. The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries told KATC TV that the accident happened after a passing boat sliced the anchor line from Grayson's boat. Grayson was injured by his boat's propeller after he jumped into the water to get his boat's anchor.
Grayson died at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales.
