The Morehouse Parish Library will once again host an entertaining and educational program for children of all ages today as part of their Summer Reading Program.
“The Harvey Rabbit and Friends Show” will be appearing at the library today, featuring Harvey Rabbit, Cecil the Orangutan and T-Boy the Alligator. Presented by Tim and Laura Allured, this is an energetic show of ventriloquism, puppetry, music, magic, comedy and audience participation.
“This show has been at every library branch in Baton Rouge,” said library director Ellen Highsmith. “They’ve also been at every one of the 13 North Louisiana Trailblazer libraries.”
Highsmith said that because the show is in such high demand, she had to book them a year in advance.
“We’ve never had them at our library before, but I’ve had other librarians tell me it’s the best program they’ve ever had,” she said. “They’ve performed in Northeast Louisiana for several years.”
The Allureds, formerly of Lake Charles, and now Lafayette, have toured elementary schools throughout Louisiana, southeast Texas and in Mississippi in their own educational programs since 1986. They’ve been familiar faces at libraries throughout Louisiana as guest performers for the Summer Reading Program since 1991.
They’ve hosted a Lake Charles cable TV show called “The Harvey Rabbit Cartoon Hour” and have produced five Harvey Rabbit videos. Their fourth video, “A Golden Rule School,” was a parenting pick in the October 2001 issue of Parenting Magazine.
Highsmith said the library has had a large turnout at every show this month. She’s expecting this show to be just as successful.
“This will be our third show,” she said. “I’m expecting a large crowd because we’ve had more people at the other shows than we had last summer.”
Highsmith said the other events hosted by the library have been successful as well.
“We had more people at the arts and crafts class then we had last year,” she said. “We had more people at the first movie this summer than we’ve ever had.”
Highsmith said overall, the Summer Reading Program has been a hit with both children and adults.
“It’s been really successful so far,” she said. “Our two sponsors, Sonic and Louisiana State Parks, have made nice contributions that really reward our readers.”
Highsmith hopes to see several families at the library today enjoying the show.
“This is top notch entertainment for children and adults,” she said. “I’ve been told this is one program we should definitely have.”
