  •   Two men were arrested Tuesday after being caught stealing scrap metal from property on Grabault Road.
Roy Hawkins, of Bastrop, and Terry McMurray, of Ruston, were arrested by the Morehouse Parish Sheriff’s Office after a passerby noticed suspicious behavior.
“A person was driving by farmland on Grabault Road and saw the two men loading up metal in a truck,” said chief Criminal Deputy Brian Shoemaker. “The person called the sheriff’s office and reported it.”
Shoemaker said deputy Josh Hawthorne responded to the scene and questioned the men.
“Investigator [Elizabeth Libby] Brixey was also assigned to the case,” Shoemaker said.
After the two men were questioned and the owner of the property was contacted, it was evident they were stealing.
Hawkins admitted that during the course of last week, he had made several trips to the same property by himself and stolen scrap metal.
“He admitted taking the metal to Road Runner [Recycling] and selling it,” Shoemaker said.
After further investigating, deputies discovered that Hawkins had taken approximately $5,000 worth of scrap metal June 4 - June 12.
McMurray stated that Hawkins had told him he had permission to get the scrap metal and needed help loading it.
Hawkins was arrested and charged with felony theft and conspiracy to commit felony theft. He is currently held at the Morehouse Parish Jail with a bond set at $4,000.
McMurray was arrested and charged with middle grade theft and conspiracy to commit middle grade theft. He is currently held at the Morehouse Parish Jail with a bond set at $15,000.
