Putting an exclamation point on his stellar prep career, Bastrop High senior Denzel Devall won the Class 4A state championship in the discus Saturday afternoon at LSU's Bernie Moore Stadium.
Buoyed by Devall's state title, the Rams made some noise in the team standings with a fourth-place finish. Breaux Bridge won the team title with 62 points, followed by Edna Karr with 47, Opelousas with 37, Bastrop with 34 and LaGrange with 32.
Devall, last year's state runner-up, moved to the middle of the podium Saturday with a throw of 152-10 to edge out second-place Robert Kennedy of Belle Chasse by over four feet.
An Alabama football signee, Devall just missed scoring in the shot put as he was seventh with a heave of 47-06.75.
Bastrop's James East accounted for eight points in the high jump with a career-best leap of 6-06. Archbishop Shaw's Lionel Ellison cleared 6-10 to win the event.
Scoring in three events, the Rams added 16 points in the running portion of the meet, including a pair of third-place finishes in the relay races.
Trevious Crossley, Jamari Payne, Keenan Williams and Kyron Thompson passed the stick for a time of 1:28.17 in the 4 x 200-meter relay, crossing the finish line behind Breaux Bridge and District 2-4A rival Wossman. Chandler Thomas, Jamal Zenon, Travan Dural and Kavarah Holmes handled the baton as Breaux Bridge put together a winning time of 1:26.76. Wossman's foursome of Deedrich Bethley, Jacquis Brooks, Donovan Gray and Justin Hubbard was timed at 1:27.67.
Ronderius Dowles, Antwone Green, Williams and Thompson were clocked at 3:23.40, just .03 seconds out of second place in the 4 x 400m. Thomas, Zenon, Lamont Abraham and Holmes were clocked at 3:21 for Breaux Bridge, which won two of the three baton races. Urial Ross, Darryl Jones, Roosevelt Washington and Justin Johnson of East Jefferson were a distant second at 3:23.37.
Williams rounded out the Rams' scoring by finishing fourth in the 200m with a 21.52 readout while running into a slight head wind.
