Allen Larkin Spires Jr. was sworn in this week as the youngest member of the Mer Rouge Board of Aldermen, filling the unexpired seat of alderman Marley Oldham.
Spires, 21, is currently a junior at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, where he is majoring in agribusiness. He said he has always been interested in public service in his home town.
“I farm here in Mer Rouge, and I’ve wanted to be involved [in public service] all my life,” he said. “I’m honored to have this chance to serve as an alderman.”
Spires is the son of Dr. Allen and Lori Spires, and the grandson of Mrs. Eleanor Spires and the late William Spires, of Mer Rouge, and Sam Rubin and the late Eileen Rubin of Monroe.
He said that he plans to qualify in the summer to run for election to the seat in the Fall election. After college, he plans to continue farming in Mer Rouge, and to continue in public service.
Mer Rouge Village Clerk Janice Nelson said Spires is the youngest aldermen to serve the village.
