  • Uncertain weather conditions forecast for Monday morning have led to cancellation of classes at all public and private schools in Morehouse Parish.
Tom Thrower, superintendent of Morehouse Parish Schools, said preliminary work to call off classes was done Friday,
"We use the 'Alert Now' system where we can contact all of our employees and parents, and we set it up Friday to make a call at 5 a.m. Monday if the situation presented itself," Thrower said. "Our plan Friday was to go out at 3 o'clock Monday morning and evaluate the roads, make the decision by 4 a.m. and let the sytem start with notifications at 5 a.m.
"After looking at the forecast, and considering we have a lot of rural roads for our buses to cover, we simply moved the notification up until 5 p.m. (Sunday)," Thrower said.
Similar to "Alert Now," Prairie View principal Ed Bain says the school uses a system called "Notify Me" to alert parents about school closures and for other purposes.
"We made the decision to call off classes and let the system take care of the rest," Bain said. "It does everything - phone calls, e-mails, text messages."
Bain said PVA used it once last year for a weather-related closure, "and within minutes the school was empty."
